National President's Challenge
So this morning I'm listening to Joel Osteen's audio book....Becoming A Better You. Today he talked about taking care of ourselves. It really made me think about what I don't do for myself. I gained 90lbs during my pregnancy. I found out that I have hypothyroidism and my metabolism went down the drain. My daughter is 19mo old now, and I still have 5olbs hanging on.

Every Monday rolls around and I'm determine to begin my new life as a healthy person. By the time Saturday rolls around, I'm back to my old ways. My bad habit is drinking soda. I have to have it morning, noon and night. It makes me sick to think about all the calories I drink during the day. Joel Osteen was saying that it takes 21 days to break a bad habit. He said to go through the pain, ask for help, if needed, and give up your bad habits.

The employees here at channel 5 will be tackling the National President's challenge March 20th through May 15th. This is something you can do as an individual or with a group. I urge you to get healthy with me this year. This is my year, I promise, and it can be yours too! Us, Moms do everything for others and never enough for ourselves. We need to make ourselves the main priority in our lives. If Mom's happy, everyone's happy. You've heard that before right? But it's so true. When we're happy and healthy, our confidence is through the roof. We're happier with our marriages/relationships. We're more active and energized to run around with the kids. When we're positive and happy, we attract happy and positive people into our lives. Moms, take time for yourself! The bonus is that you will be a great role model for your children. With obesity rising in children, this is a great way to turn that epidemic around.

ABOUT ME
Mary Rantanen
Name: Mary Rantanen
Location: Staunton, IL

When I was in junior high, I made it very clear to everyone that I was going to move to New York and work at MTV.  My dream came true 10 years later.  I have always had a passion for music, reading and writing.  In my opinion, it's the greatest escape route from reality.

I'm one of those "small town girls living in a small time world".  I give credit for all of my creative passion to my seventh grade teacher, Mrs.. Lois Meckles.  Mrs.. Meckles opened my eyes to a whole new world.  After High School, I attended Western Illinois University.  I received my Bachelor of Arts in Communications/Broadcasting with a Minor in English Literature in 1997.  A week after graduation, I moved to New York City to begin my internship at MTV Networks.  After my internship, I was hired on as a freelancer.  In 2000, I moved back home to Metro St. Louis to be closer to my family.  I began working in the traffic department here at KSDK and I've been here ever since.

So what is the traffic Department?  No, I do not ride with Bill Houska every morning in the helicopter.  Everything you watch on T.V. is timed to the very last second.  That is what Traffic is responsible for.  We create the logs with all the times.  My responsibility is putting those pesky commercials on the air.  The commercials are sent to me and I'm told how the commercials are to air.  The job is very detailed and can be stressful.  But working with great folks everyday keeps the stress levels from driving me crazy.

I am currently living in Staunton, IL with my husband Josh, our daughter Presley and our two cats Peanut and Bucky.  I want to thank my parents for always believing in me.  My dreams have come true a thousand times.  But nothing compares to having a family to go home to everyday.
