American's addiction to soda
I suffer from an addiction. This addiction is toxic, poisonous, and lethal. It will rot my teeth. It will wear away my calcium in my bones. It will eat the lining of my stomach. I will suffer from Type II diabetes, the gout, high blood pressure, cancer and obesity. This addiction is the main reason for most people's health problems. I am talking about soda. Yes, even the diet soda.

I am trying desperately to quit my addiction. So I got online and looked for reason why soda's bad for you. I'm one of those people. I want to see in black and white all the pros and cons. So I stumbled on this webiste http://www.oleda.com/. This is what I learned and I want to share it with all of you moms.

"Teenagers and children, who many soft drinks are marketed toward, are among the largest consumers. In the past 10 years, soft drink consumption among children has almost doubled in the United States. Teenage boys now drink, on average, three or more cans of soda per day, and 10 percent drink seven or more cans a day. The average for teenage girls is more than two cans a day, and 10 percent drink more than five cans a day. "

Now I'm not pointing fingers because sometimes my daughter sneaks in a drink here and there. But I really want us moms to think about what you just read. We wouldn't think twice about giving our children drugs and/or alchohol. But we allow them to drink soda!?! Here's a quote on what aspartame found in diet sodas do to our bodies....

"This chemical is used as a sugar substitute in diet soda. There are over 92 different health side effects associated with aspartame consumption including brain tumors, birth defects, diabetes, emotional disorders and epilepsy/seizures. Further, when aspartame is stored for long periods of time or kept in warm areas it changes to methanol, an alcohol that converts to formaldehyde and formic acid, which are known carcinogens. "

The author made a great point in the article. Children don't think long term. By the time they hit adulthood, it may be too late. The damage could be done. Did you know that caffeine effects kid's developing brains? It makes sense but I never stopped to think about it. I hope you make time to read the rest of the article. Let's teach our children healthy behaviors now. NO MORE SODA MOMS!!!!

ABOUT ME
Mary Rantanen
Name: Mary Rantanen
Location: Staunton, IL

When I was in junior high, I made it very clear to everyone that I was going to move to New York and work at MTV.  My dream came true 10 years later.  I have always had a passion for music, reading and writing.  In my opinion, it's the greatest escape route from reality.

I'm one of those "small town girls living in a small time world".  I give credit for all of my creative passion to my seventh grade teacher, Mrs.. Lois Meckles.  Mrs.. Meckles opened my eyes to a whole new world.  After High School, I attended Western Illinois University.  I received my Bachelor of Arts in Communications/Broadcasting with a Minor in English Literature in 1997.  A week after graduation, I moved to New York City to begin my internship at MTV Networks.  After my internship, I was hired on as a freelancer.  In 2000, I moved back home to Metro St. Louis to be closer to my family.  I began working in the traffic department here at KSDK and I've been here ever since.

So what is the traffic Department?  No, I do not ride with Bill Houska every morning in the helicopter.  Everything you watch on T.V. is timed to the very last second.  That is what Traffic is responsible for.  We create the logs with all the times.  My responsibility is putting those pesky commercials on the air.  The commercials are sent to me and I'm told how the commercials are to air.  The job is very detailed and can be stressful.  But working with great folks everyday keeps the stress levels from driving me crazy.

I am currently living in Staunton, IL with my husband Josh, our daughter Presley and our two cats Peanut and Bucky.  I want to thank my parents for always believing in me.  My dreams have come true a thousand times.  But nothing compares to having a family to go home to everyday.
