Those Darn Gas Prices!
Are the gas prices killing you?? We're all in the same boat. We spend more money going to work in a month than we do on a car payment. But besides the whole money situation, I think there's a bigger problem. You see, money comes and goes, but memories are forever.

Our family fun days are going away. Those days of hopping in the car and driving down Alton's River Bend. Float trips with friends. Weekend getaways to Memphis. A week at the Atlantic Ocean. All of this is gone for my family. We just can't afford to do these activities. Back in the days, it was nothing for us to drive to St. Louis. Now, it's something we ponder over.

Here is my other problem. I am now carpooling to and from work. I ride with my mom and two other wonderful ladies. It is saving all of us tons of money. Unfortunately, I am out the door at 6:15am and not getting home until 6:25pm. I feel like there is not enough time in the day to play with my daughter and talk to my husband. If I stay up past 9pm, it's a miracle. I'm sure a bunch of you moms can relate. By the time you get home and eat dinner, it's time to get the kids ready for bed.

So my solution to my problem is that I am really going to start living for the weekends. I want to spend every waking moment I can with my daughter and husband. I know I don't need to drive off anywhere to make memories. We're hitting the parks, going for walks, and visiting with family.

Hang in there Moms! There has to be an end to this gas nightmare.....right????

ABOUT ME
Mary Rantanen
Name: Mary Rantanen
Location: Staunton, IL

When I was in junior high, I made it very clear to everyone that I was going to move to New York and work at MTV.  My dream came true 10 years later.  I have always had a passion for music, reading and writing.  In my opinion, it's the greatest escape route from reality.

I'm one of those "small town girls living in a small time world".  I give credit for all of my creative passion to my seventh grade teacher, Mrs.. Lois Meckles.  Mrs.. Meckles opened my eyes to a whole new world.  After High School, I attended Western Illinois University.  I received my Bachelor of Arts in Communications/Broadcasting with a Minor in English Literature in 1997.  A week after graduation, I moved to New York City to begin my internship at MTV Networks.  After my internship, I was hired on as a freelancer.  In 2000, I moved back home to Metro St. Louis to be closer to my family.  I began working in the traffic department here at KSDK and I've been here ever since.

So what is the traffic Department?  No, I do not ride with Bill Houska every morning in the helicopter.  Everything you watch on T.V. is timed to the very last second.  That is what Traffic is responsible for.  We create the logs with all the times.  My responsibility is putting those pesky commercials on the air.  The commercials are sent to me and I'm told how the commercials are to air.  The job is very detailed and can be stressful.  But working with great folks everyday keeps the stress levels from driving me crazy.

I am currently living in Staunton, IL with my husband Josh, our daughter Presley and our two cats Peanut and Bucky.  I want to thank my parents for always believing in me.  My dreams have come true a thousand times.  But nothing compares to having a family to go home to everyday.
