The Birthday Gift Guessing Game
Few things excite my daughters more than getting a birthday party invitation. I wish I could say it was just as exciting for me! Don't get me wrong, I enjoy celebrating birthdays as much as the next mom. However, the big events are a growing source of frustration for me because of the time spent agonizing over where to shop, what to buy and how much to spend on the birthday boy or girl!

I miss the good old days when my oldest was in preschool and invited to her first round of birthday celebrations. With just one child in the mix, it was manageable. I remember giving "Barney" books and anything else related to the big purple dinosaur, since he was all the rage at that time. I 'd surveyed a few friends what they spent on presents and felt fairly confident I was doing a good job of buying a nice gift without blowing the budget.

Pretty soon daughter number two was getting invitations. Barney was no longer an official "craze" and to make matters more difficult, she started getting invitations to several parties for kindergarten boys.

As the mother of three girls, I'm really lost when it comes to shopping for boys! Fast forward to my current source of birthday party gift stress, middle school! My oldest daughter's friends are turning thirteen and the "right" gift has never been more important. Yes gift cards are great, but I can't keep up with which store is the most "in" at the moment, Clarie's, Abercrombie, Hollister? Don't even get me started about the fact that my daughter seems to think I'm an ATM machine AND a personal shopper, all wrapped up in one (not so super) mom. The biggest question of all seems to be, how much to give? Does the gift amount go up with age? My daughter sure seems to think so! Should I make her pay for all or some of the present out of her babysitting money? At the same time, I'm trying to keep up with gift ideas for my six-year-old daughter's friends. Something High School Musical maybe or how about Hannah Montana? I say stop the madness and bring Barney back!
Comments:
Wendy, according to my teen-age grandchildren Hot Topics is the place to shop.

Love watching Show Me St. Louis.

Are you girls close in age where they've actually been invited to the same party? Our's just started preschool, so the birthday parties are just starting, but having triplets...I wonder when all three are invited...do we send three separate gifts, one from each child, or one gift. And if it is a combined gift, does that mean I should spend three times as much as I would if it were from one? Ugh. I'm interested in reading more comments. Good question!

Linda, Thanks for the shopping tip! It will come in handy for the holidays!

Mel, we've invited twins to birthday parties before and they've given one gift. I personally don't think you need to spend triple the amount. You'd go broke! Thanks for the comment.

Ever since I was a high school girl in Chicago,  I wanted to be a television journalist.   Here I am, eighteen years in the business and I haven't had a boring day on the job yet!  I started out reporting on fires, crime and school board meetings.    When the news schedule got a little too difficult for juggling my job and my growing family,  I was given a wonderful opportunity to join Show Me St. Louis.   Now I spend my days checking out new places to shop, eat and play!   I also get to meet interesting people on a daily basis.

I love the fact that Show Me St. Louis is a source of "fun" information for people.    Where's a good place to have a birthday party? What's the new exhibit at the Art Museum.   What restaurant has a romantic setting for two parents in desperate need for a "no kids" night out?   When and where is the Hannah Montana concert?  It's all information I am interested in as a wife and mother of three girls.  It helps to work with such talented people on Show Me St. Louis, from the producers, to the photographers, to my on-air pals, Lewis and Courtney.   We have some stress, but mostly a great time getting Show Me St. Louis on the air every day.   I feel so fortunate to have a job I enjoy after so much after all these years!
