Lunch, Shopping and Mammograms!
I am overdue for a mammogram and really don't have a good reason for putting it off. Yes, I've been busy with work and kids finishing up school for the year. I also don't feel an urgency since my first mammogram was fine and I have no family history of breast cancer. I guess the "walk in" option at my local hospital almost makes it too easy for me to procrastinate. When something seemingly more important comes up, I tell myself "I'll go next week". Well, the weeks are turning into months very quickly!

Recently I heard a great idea from another woman, when it comes to making sure these very important screenings don't get skipped. She, her mother and sister set aside a certain date once a year for lunch and shopping. The only catch is, the first thing they do on that day is get mammograms. It makes the day something to look forward to and productive at the same time. Of course you can use your imagination to come up with funny names for this interesting combination of activities!

As we approach the big "Susan G. Komen For The Cure" race on June 21st, breast cancer is a topic we've been talking about a great deal here at the station. It's a terrible disease and so many women and their families suffer. The rest of us can do our part to remind each other to do breast self exams on a regular basis. I for one, will also be inviting a few friends to "do lunch", along with some shopping and a mammogram!

ABOUT ME
Wendy Erkison
Name: Wendy Erikson
Location: St. Louis, MO

Ever since I was a high school girl in Chicago,  I wanted to be a television journalist.   Here I am, eighteen years in the business and I haven't had a boring day on the job yet!  I started out reporting on fires, crime and school board meetings.    When the news schedule got a little too difficult for juggling my job and my growing family,  I was given a wonderful opportunity to join Show Me St. Louis.   Now I spend my days checking out new places to shop, eat and play!   I also get to meet interesting people on a daily basis.

I love the fact that Show Me St. Louis is a source of "fun" information for people.    Where's a good place to have a birthday party? What's the new exhibit at the Art Museum.   What restaurant has a romantic setting for two parents in desperate need for a "no kids" night out?   When and where is the Hannah Montana concert?  It's all information I am interested in as a wife and mother of three girls.  It helps to work with such talented people on Show Me St. Louis, from the producers, to the photographers, to my on-air pals, Lewis and Courtney.   We have some stress, but mostly a great time getting Show Me St. Louis on the air every day.   I feel so fortunate to have a job I enjoy after so much after all these years!
